If you have multiple citizenships I prefer to renew in person in the UK, even if it costs more as I'm uncomfortable sending multiple passports internationally to the UK
You don't need to send the actual passport - you are allowed to send a photocopy of every page instead. I imagine most people take this option rather than chance any number of postal services and/or HMPO losing the other passport.
