It certainly sounds like a packaging issue, or rate of water flow issue (do the "old" style coffee makers drip water faster than the new models?), plus maybe finer-ground coffee making it worse?
In any case it seems like a solvable problem, and it's hard to believe it hasn't been fixed. Also interesting to think how this even happened...is Stumptown/Peet's is doing their own manufacturing vs working with a copacker who has experience making coffee filters for airplanes? I wouldn't expect that.
