It is like if you paid for a Toyota Corolla, but instead got a Toyota Camry. And then complaining about how the Toyota Camry is so inferior to a Lexus ES.
There are some in this thread that have argued that the buffet here actually compares well to great European buffets they've had haha - so there is actually a difference in taste buds, too. That just blows my mind, but yes, we're having a debate about subjective impressions, kind of like the what color is the dress thing. It can't be resolved objectively.
As I've said before though I don't think cost is much of an explanation. In many countries the food is generally excellent even when it is cheap - walk into any convenience store in Japan for instance and you can get a good lunch for $5 or less. It's more to do with culture - we have way lower standards so to get really good food you have to pay for a Lexus - usually. But not always! Even here there are food carts that serve excellent food. I can get an awesome taco for $5 at Grand Central Market in LA, etc.
I did remember a Hyatt that has a superb breakfast and is in the same category - The Shay in Los Angeles. It's not a buffet, so it's not exactly apples to apples, but it is also free for Globalists and the quality is light years beyond the SOMA, and the nightly cost is comparable or even a bit less. Also has a nice rooftop pool/bar. They don't tend to give Globalists the greatest rooms, though. View has always been lacking.
But as I keep saying I don't think SOMA is "terrible" nor do I think it's bad for the class of hotel by US standards. It's lower quality than I personally want to get at a hotel, and it does deter me from staying there, but I still love the rooms and other aspects.
