It seems you can generate a 2D barcode with the booking/eticket info. Etihad sent me a booking confirmation / eticket with the 2D code on the top when I booked my ticket in late June. I have also noticed that on my Air India tickets. This barcode has nothing to do with the QR code on boarding passes.
