Labor and fuel are significantly more expensive, airlines must find other ways to increase revenue to compete. For example, AA now makes most of its profits on the Advantage Program rather than operations.
No doubt, air travel is cheaper; I think they can make the point without throwing in that non sequitur of "BTW, it took five stops to go LAX-BOS in 1978."
And...I haven't seen $119 one way LAX-BOS lately. Seems more like $400.
