FCM upgrades are non-transferable with advance changes (prior to check-in window), but you can get a credit for the cost of the upgrade should you change/cancel flights before check-in window. I believe some have reported success with SDCing on them recently, but the T&C's aren't really clear here. Cheapest FCM upgrade offers on route (with Z bucket open) are generally in line with FC fare differentials on non-stop fares which is $90 on this route (although you can't upfare on a per segment basis on connecting itins). If there is Z bucket open on flight, it will probably not get any cheaper than what you are seeing now.
What about after check in window opens? The scenario is I'm scheduled on a flight at 1600, but have an event 75 minutes away that is scheduled to run until 1300, if the event runs an hour late, I won't know that I'm going to miss the flight until 1430 or later. What are my options? Am I just eating the FCM amount? If there is an open F seat on the 2100 flight will I get that? This would be spending personal money on the FCM for a company purchased ticket.
