Not so odd because if they’re diverting then they have fuel to dump and they might also not be able to land in the UK. It could also be for crew hours.

About a year ago a relative was flying into LCY but there was such bad fog that it was closed and aircraft were being diverted all over the UK but the flight returned to base in the end because there was just no way it could land in London.
