I would say they need to physically live within 90 minutes drive of thier base airport.....to reduce tiredness.
Pilot trips (at least in US) are often 4 days in durarion, with a commute before the first and after the last leg. Not very different than the silicon valley lawyer who works 4 days a week in Seattle and stays at corporate apartment in Washington 3 nights a week.
