A List and A+ members with CP who are traveling with their companions get sequential boarding numbers. Even though the reservations have separate confirmation numbers, they are somehow "linked." I suspect the ticket agent was trying to do the same thing (whatever that means behind the scenes) but failed. (This, of course, assumes that your conversation with the agent occurred before T-36. After that, I don't think there's anything that can be done.)
