I think just economy would be fine for us unless we could find a good deal on PE.
Seat selection is free in Economy -- except "Basic Economy" -- on AA. You won't get "Preferred" seats for free, but they have the same seat pitch as non-Preferred Economy seats. ("Preferred" seats might include aisle seats and those closer to the front of the cabin.)

For someone 6'4", though, I would strongly advise against a regular Economy seat on any trans-Atlantic carrier. If you don't want to spring for Premium Economy, book Economy on AA (or on UA, if you're willing to fly into EWR), and pay for extra-leg-room Economy seats (Main Cabin Extra on AA; Economy Plus on UA.)

Seat pitch on AA's 772 in MCE is 35-36"; it's just 31-32" in regular Economy.
