Passenger Carry On Bags -the square ones in the 80s.

So I was born in the late 70s. I only flew once in the 80s, never in the 90s, and really started flying in the 2000s.

Yesterday I was in a thrift shop and we saw an original square Pan Am passenger carry on bag. It got me thinking, when I flew in the late 80s, I got a square TWA square bag.

What was the deal with these. We had backpacks in the 80s and 90s. Why did everyone use these square bags? When did they stop getting used?

This also makes me think that whoever put wheels on a suitcase the first time must have been a genius.
