I hear you regarding the fine print. In fact, the first time I encountered this issue was at a property in DC about 10 years ago. I booked the AAA rate only to find out later that it was prepaid. Luckily, the property was one I stayed in regularly so I asked the hotel if they would be willing to let me cancel once I discovered that the rate was prepaid & they agreed.
