Because the computer won't know that some of those 12 folks who may have checked in won't show for any number of good reasons and therefor one of those seats could potentially fly out empty instead of with one of us elites sitting in it.
The way I look at it, don't count on it and it becomes a pleasant surprise when you do get a battlefield.
The computer DOES correctly indicate that no upgrade seats are available at the time of check-in and it doesn't know what's gonna change between that time and the time the flight actually leaves the gate.
