Is the OP remembering and comparing prices in yen or dollars or Euro or pounds or.....? Foreign exchange rate fluctuations might explain some of the differences, although again chain hotels might think of rates more in the chain's home currency than in yen, even though most of the hotel's costs would be denominated in yen.

Another factor might be time of year. Late fall is the time to see beautiful leaves in Tokyo, so it's a popular time to travel.

The inventory point would make some sense … because the exchange rate is around about what I’d expect - so don’t think it’s because of that - I’m looking at prices in GBP

I wonder if it’s that popular this year in mid to late November that are keeping prices higher too… but then, wouldn’t September pricing be much higher too? That’s around 20% above pricing I’ve seen in recent years

I guess I’ll just keep an eye on it.
