Good point about asking for compensation while still checked in at the property.
Breakfast is not a Welcome Gift benefit for Platinum Elite and above at hotels (not resorts) branded as Autograph Collection (also JW Marriott, Marriott Hotels, Delta Hotels, and Renaissance Hotels). Arriving guest have a choice of 1,000 points or a one-time $10 F&B credit, either through online check-in or in person at the front desk.
Daily breakfast is a completely separate benefit in addition to the Welcome Gift. It's a function of Guaranteed Lounge Access.

Ask to speak to the front desk manager or above. If you get nowhere, then start making phone calls. Be aware that some phone agents know a lot more about benefits than others. Occasionally, agents have the attitude that the customer is always wrong. Then call another agent.
Metropolitan at The 9, Autograph Collection is a hotel, not a resort, so Autograph Collection hotel rules apply. From the Terms & Conditions:
"United States and Canada: If Lounge is closed or property does not have a Lounge or approved alternative, property to offer daily continental breakfast in restaurant for Member +1 or Member can choose 750 Points per night of Stay"
It's the member's choice, not the hotel's choice. If the hotel fails to offer
your choice of daily breakfast or 750 points per night to you, the hotel owes you Guest Compensation. From the Terms & Conditions:
"Globally: U.S. $100 If no continental breakfast or continental breakfast alternative was offered to Member"
Most Autograph Collection hotels play by the rules, take good care of Platinum Elite (and above) guests, and recognize that it's good business to do so. A few don't mind depriving them of published benefits, generating bad reviews online, and potentially costing Marriott hundreds of future nights by driving away elite guests.
In most cases, Autograph Collection hotels provide a full breakfast in the restaurant as a lounge alternative. If a hotel chooses to provide only "continental breakfast," the minimum required by the Terms & Conditions, it should at least mean a breakfast as traditionally served on the European continent -- not just a thawed, mass-produced pastry and a cup of coffee or an inadequate daily credit toward breakfast.
