Perhaps you expect something different from US-based airlines, but if you proactively cancel a booking with a European airline you are going to be charged the cancellation penalty laid out in the fare conditions. (paid or award) It doesn't matter that it appears 12+ hours in advance that you might miss your connecting flight.
