It worked last year with my wife's account. And the new expiry date was 1 year after I cancelled the award stay for a refund. So it might make sense to make an award booking for well into the future. (assuming you don't forget to cancel it later)

YMMV though since I think the book and cancel trick isn't really supposed to count as activity.
