CX Gold vs JGC Sapphire

I’m finally back on the road and would love some opinions on renewing my status with CX for 25/26. I hold a JGC membership and typically fly a couple of flights each year to maintain my status, alongside my other JMB membership points. For work, PVG/PEK/ some LHR, will be booked through CX Business+

However, I've noticed that CX seems overcrowded lately, especially with the Marriott status match and various SCB credit card offers, which have packed the lounges and devalued Asia Miles. On the positive side, I managed to redeem four tickets on CX for Japan this summer and received two upgrades to business class on my PEK and PVG flights from HKG (out of 6!! For past 4 months)

I know flights from HKG tend to be more expensive than other ports. I still remember needing to sign a declaration form ten years ago (on board) when commuting HKG/TPE using ex-TPE tickets. Looking at costs, flying two round trips in business class from HKG to HND to JFK on JL metal and elite status should easily renew Sapphire status, but two round trips in business class from HKG to JFK on CX Flex only yield 480 status points?

I’m not saying JGC is without its drawbacks—miles can expire unless you maintain a 5* status, and their award redemption is more complicated than CX based on my own experience. JL recent restructuring feels similar to when CX eliminated sector qualifying. As I gradually split my time between HKG and HND, I’m considering fully dedicating myself to JAL once my CX elite status expires.

Probably I should run for DM status with CX at least once?

Looking forward to hearing from all the travel gurus—thanks!
