Dropping a passenger on domestic award flight

I booked an award flight for family members (3 passengers) for a domestic flight on AA. This is for a one-way award flight.

One of the passengers can't make this trip. Is it straight forward to call AA to drop one of the passengers from the award itinerary and get refunded the miles and tax, while keeping the remainder passengers on the reservation? I have done this many times online for United Airline award flights and it is straight forward on United.

Or does one need to cancel the entire award reservation and book a new one with the remaining passengers? Award flight mileage requirements are dynamic and the miles required have gone up quite a bit since I originally booked the award flight.
