Catskill is another possibility. It's very similar to Hudson but is on the west side of the river (so no train), and as a result it hasn't turned into quite the same haven for expatriate Brooklynites as Hudson has.
It's six miles from the Hudson Amtrak station to Catskill, via the Rip Van Winkle Bridge. There is regularly scheduled weekday bus service, but for a traveler with a lot of luggage, a taxi would probably be better.
