I wouldn’t risk it either. Immigration at JNB can take painfully long, especially if you arrive around peak time. South Africans are also not the most courteous when it comes to “I have a flight in xxx minutes. Can I please get through?”
I would try to catch a later connecting flight, 2-3 hours should be much safer.
As I understand it, if the bags are checked through, I do not need to go through immigration, correct? I believe you are saying that, IF I can't check through, don't do it!
I think my latest plan has me confident I will get the bags checked through.
