I went to Turkmenistan about a decade ago. Was a fascinating trip that I'll never forget. It actually wasn't that hard to get a proper visa (My wife is from the US and I am from the Netherlands). Would suggest to combine a trip with Turkmenistan Airlines with an actual visit to the country.
