The number of active members doesn't really matter much either. Active could be 1 stay every couple of years or 100 nights per year.
The only reason that the 48 million number is mentioned is that stock market analysts like easy-to-understand metrics for growth, with loyalty program membership being a proxy for more valuable customers than OTA-derived customers.
