Have you been there since the Lahaina fire? Maui tourist visits are down ~25%. It's been awful for the businesses that depend on tourism. I was there a couple of months ago and OGG was the quietest I've ever seen it.
Every August for past four years including right now.
I am not saying the entire airport is busy. Just the gates area where the flights departing from around the lounge area is busy and hard to find a seat as passengers congregate around the passages. After a bank of flights depart, seats are plentiful.
