It affects everyone differently. Some people don't have trouble. The highest I've ever stayed overnight was in Alma, Colorado for a weekend at 11,000 feet. I got a little winded walking up the stairs of the house but that was about it. At the top of Pike's Peak at 14,000 feet, my heart beat faster while walking around but again, that was about it. Just don't do anything strenuous for the first day until you know how it affects you.
