Looks like MH is in a meltdown right now. Their auto rebooking tool is not working properly and passengers' with connections aren't rebooked properly and refund during an IRROP is not working as it should. No idea why phone ticketing can't complete a simple date change and most importantly, most passengers can't seem to change their itinerary online. Most people can't get through their phone lines.

Your experience mirrors mine. Got through to the special involuntary rebooking helpline after multiple attempts. Hold time was surprisingly short, maybe 10 mins or so. Agent changed it to the flight I agreed on, said will take another 3-4 hours to re-issue the ticket but the ticket never came and that segment was dropped completely. Had to walk into their city ticketing office and have sort out their own mess there (to the city office's credit, it only took me 15 mins in and out).
I understand that option is not viable for everyone but that's the best bet so far. They do offer more options for re-routing etc. at the city ticketing office.
