It's always been like this. Batteries and electronic devices need to get removed. I'm a frequent traveler into China and it's easy, and I carry a lot of items. When in line I put the following out immediately:
I usually 2, sometimes 3 phones when I travel, and tons of cables.
I put as much of that stuff as practical (battery packs and naked batteries are universal no-no, though, and of course I carry on my primary phone) in my checked bag (same drill in other countries).
