You can see the upgrade standby lists of flight status now. Just buy any fare that you are willing to pay and request for PlusPoints upgrade. G, K, L, T or S requires 80 PlusPoints; W (and up) requires 40 PlusPoints; premium economy fare (R, A, O) requires 30 PlusPoints.

If you compare Premium Plus and Polaris lists, you can guess how many of them bought Premium economy fare and how many use GS PlusPoints with low/no status (not near the top of PP list but on the top of Polaris list).

You will get upgrade cleared. UA 869 is much easier. Both flights are PN9. So, there is no GS and GS-sponsored pax on either flight.
