Nope; as I mentioned in the OP, the ticket was booked a few weeks ago, and I only cancelled the ticket today.
But that being said, I did get an exception change less than 2 days ago due to an incoming typhoon in Japan. I asked to move the departure date up by a day in case the typhoon came on the original departure day. This was a separate issue from later realizing my return date was also too soon by a day. Could this perhaps have caused the ticket to reset its refund eligibility period somehow?
Either way, it's imperative I get a refund like the Delta site and confirmation email say I will. Had it said I would only get an eCredit, I would have just paid the change fee.
One way is to find the fare code on the receipt and then look up the fare rules on EF. Alternatively you can try to do a dummy booking on delta.com and hope to replicate exactly the same fare code, then click on the links to see the abbreviated and full fare rules. If different segments have different fare rules, the most restrictive rules apply to the entire ticket/PNR.
ADDED: With most waivers (for weather etc.), you get one free change or one free cancellation, but not both.
