I was under the impression they were not refundable, but now that the ticket is cancelled, I'm not sure how I can double check that detail.

Nope; as I mentioned in the OP, the ticket was booked a few weeks ago, and I only cancelled the ticket today.

But that being said, I did get an exception change less than 2 days ago due to an incoming typhoon in Japan. I asked to move the departure date up by a day in case the typhoon came on the original departure day. This was a separate issue from later realizing my return date was also too soon by a day. Could this perhaps have caused the ticket to reset its refund eligibility period somehow?

Either way, it's imperative I get a refund like the Delta site and confirmation email say I will. Had it said I would only get an eCredit, I would have just paid the change fee.
