If you look at the links in the post above, you will see that an Upper reward to JFK in peak season is 115K per person - the kicker is the huge fees that are added - the 'carrier imposed surcharge' just seems to get bigger and bigger, so I am not surprised at the figures you were quoted.

Obviously you can reduce the number of points needed for the two of you by using the companion voucher, but you will still both be hit for the fees and taxes.

The good news is the JFK is usually very good for reward availability

Some people look at booking in Premium and using points to upgrade - you have to do the maths to see which method is best for you.
