SYD suffers from a lack of available check in space. Bag drop refers to those who've checked in online... not a facility for dropping bags before check in for the flight opens. If travelling airlines other than Qantas then anticipate the desks opening 3hrs before.

You might appreciate leaving bags at the left luggage facility on arrival and heading into the city for a few hours. Or taking a day room for a few hours at Rydges Sydney Airport hotel opposite the International Terminal.
