MCT is only really relevant at the point of sale of the ticket, not on day of travel.

I'm not surprised OP had to settle for a second bus - it is not the general case that people on short connections are moved to the front. And with a wetlease crew I wouldn't expect it.

KLM should quite clearly pay up duty of care.
