On the other hand, I've heard the JW Marriott is more of a business hotel, and opinions on the location are mixed. Any advice?

Additionally, does anyone know what Christmas Day is like in Singapore? Are restaurants, shopping malls, and other attractions typically closed? I'm trying to figure out how to celebrate with my family while we're there.
I have not stayed at the St. Regis but I can recommend the JW Marriott having stayed there several times. I like it because it is well connected to numerous shopping malls and MRT stations so it is very easy to get around. You will also get lounge access which is very good. While I have not stayed at the St. Regis I am not a fan of its location... it's a good 15 minute walk to an MRT station without cover, and is not convenient for any of the shopping malls. You should also consider either the Tang Plaza Marriott (which have pretty nice and spacious suites) or the Westin (can't vouch for their suites). Both are right on top of an MRT station making for good all-island access. Tang Plaza has numerous shopping malls easily accessible. Westin is not so good for local shopping, but it's only a couple of stops on the MRT to many.

I like the three I mention and find it hard to chose between them... so for an extended trip to Singapore next month I will spend 5 days in each... because why not.

I have visited Singapore at Christmas and you can expect lots of decorations. The pastry chefs in many of the hotels go out of their way to make extravagant ginger bread house displays. One year (in Swissotel / Fairmont) there was a very well done ginger bread steam train locomotive. It's been many years since I was there for Christmas day so I don't remember if the shops were open or not.

Enjoy!
