You need the points credited to your account before it expires. If your membership card says "valid until 2 Jan" then your membership expires at 23:59 on 2 Jan. The risk with last minute flights is whether they credit, particularly partner flights. Usually QR booked flights credit to QRPC whilst you are in the air, but occasionally not and there have been reports here of QR being negative about backdating points to the date of travel
