Sounds like a very unpleasant experience and then having to spend hours at EWR... If the seats were really available, it should have worked. Maybe they were and the agents just didn't do things correctly (and the supervisor might have been able to help) or maybe they were not (but appeared to be). It's too bad because that's a nice flight in F...but you'll hopefully have other opportunities. And remember the miles with EK expire.
