Sounds like it might be one to keep a close eye on other routes/availability and jump on the first option OP finds acceptable. Best laid plans, and all that.
Unless there are specific guidance, the Standard Customer Guidance applies, which in a non-Joint Business or BA/IB routing offers practically no options except either refund or accept the routing they throw at you.
The only thing I can think of is to ask the agents to escalate to Oneworld Liasion, and get BA to speak to JL to see if a F seat can be opened for LAX routing (assuming cash fare is still available). This really depending on airline's willingness - QR is, for example, infamous for saying no to any Oneworld Liasion request.
