1. Prepare for your trip by reading Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's epic poem Evangeline, which follows an Acadian girl named Evangeline and her search for her lost love Gabriel during the expulsion of the Acadians from Canada in the 18th century, (The Louisiana word "Cajun" is simply a .......ization of the word "Acadian," and the Cajuns of Louisiana, at least historically speaking, are the decedents of those who fled from Canada to southwestern Louisiana during the expulsion.)

2. Avoid the interstate highways as much as possible. When leaving or returning to New Orleans, for example, drive the River Road, which follows the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge (even if you follow Swag's advice and skip Baton Rouge). There are several historic plantations worth visiting on either side of the River, and (unless things have changed since I last did it) free state-operated ferries that will take you from one side of the river to the other.

Another good option for avoiding Interstate 10 is taking U.S. Highway 90 between New Orleans and Lafayette. When I did a similar trip, I left New Orleans on Highway 90 to Lafayette, and then took I-10 from Lafayette to Baton Rouge, where I picked up the River Road back to New Orleans.

3. HIt many of the small "Cajun country" towns for some real charm. Breaux Bridge, St. Martinville, and New Iberia, for example. In St. Martinville, you can see a statute of Evangeline, commemorating the Longfellow poem. On Avery Island, near New Iberia, you can take a tour of the Tabasco factory (an 8-minute video, followed by a 2-minute walk through the factory, followed by exiting through the gift shop), but more important than the tour is going to the Jungle Gardens, which notwithstanding the terrible name, is a really cool plant and wildlife preserve and bird sanctuary adjacent to the Tabasco factory.

4. Call Roy and Annie Blanachard at +1-337-441-9268 to arrange a personal swamp boat tour. (Do not text. Do not email. Roy and Annie are in their 80s and still operate the old fashioned way. You need to call) Roy is not just a tour guide. He and Annie have lived their entire lives in, on and around the Atchafalaya swamp, and in his retirement Roy operates a boat built by his son (a welder) giving these tours. They live in St. Martinville, and will direct you to meet them at their home. He charges a flat $100, which is a real bargain given that he can accommodate up to 5 people on the boat. But even if there are just two of you, and you might be able to save a little money doing a group tour elsewhere, I guarantee that doing it with Roy will be better. And in addition to taking you through the swamp, he and Annie can give you far better advice than I can about what else to do on your trip.
