Well so far I've comprehensively struck out (five asks). I've tried a mix of asking flight attendants and doing a visit to the flight deck during boarding (easier on widebodies). Both times with FAs, it seemed to me the flight attendants forgot to check with the pilots, or at least they didn't follow up with me afterward — maybe my timing on those was poor. When I've asked the pilots, they've apparently known what I was talking about, but they didn't have any. A consolation prize when I've asked at the flight deck was a spin in the captain's seat, though, which is always fun. Until recently, I think the last time I got to do that was on my final 747 flight.

I checked with a FA last night on the best protocol on getting the trading card. He suggested to ask for them during boarding or deplaning, and was aware of what I was talking about. He even proactively called the flight deck and confirmed that they had them.
The irony was that as the galley FA was gesturing for me to go to the cockpit, the purser, who didn't know my intentions, thought I was about to bumrush the cockpit (while we are deplaning) and tried to stop me.
