OK, I did not explain my disappointment correctly. On Hotels.com one used to get both competitive prices as well as a free night for every ten booked. So a 9.1% discount rate. That is now down to 1-2% hence my disappointment.
PS Not disputing flight savings on Expedia.
Well... as 'platinum' I can get up to 6% on hotels.com VIP properties, but even that is pants compared to the old program. I've already cancelled a very expensive hotel with them over the Christmas period, because it's now better value to go with booking.com and get the 6x Avios from that.
For me, hotels.com is now relegated from being my favourite hotel site, to being only used for the odd opportunistic booking when TCB/Quidco have one of their 15/20% cashback days...
