I am sure that far more people buy a round trip and for whatever reason only end up wanting to fly the return, and get a lfe le$$on. Or they get advice so wrong that it's cringworthy from calling or chatting with airline agents. A year or two ago, Aeroplan told me to just skip an origin segment since when I called to eliminate a feeder flight the points cost went way up.

Sucks that when airlines mess up, sometimes the quickest resolution (to not sleep at an airport or miss an event) is to buy another $$ ticket and roll the dice for reimbursement, which is far more complicated for everyone.
Well, no one can resist reading about a train wreck. This thread will fade into the Flyertalk ether pretty quickly until I post the final outcome I’m sure. I posted because despite the number of hours I have spent on AC metal, nothing remotely like this has ever happened to me, so I was genuinely curious. Lot’s of good feedback though.

Funny you say that as my wife started arguing with me ‘they can’t cancel his ticket, what if he decided to drive and wanted to fly back’. I did not win the argument, despite being right 😉.

Option three is what we went with, and I have made out the forms for Ontario small claims court, took about 30 minutes if anyone is curious. I have no faith that they even have a process to deal with a refund demand like this one. If there is no process, it either will not happen, or will take months. If I’m wrong, I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

That is something which is embarrassing for the airline (to admit) and why they would try and not deal with the issue & continue to deny the person flew on the flight.
This was exactly my first thought. Freaking US Customs knows everything including if you’ve checked a bag, and that facial recognition system at the Nexus line always spooks me. Waiting to hear back from CBSA is fun.
