Yes, to be competitive you have to be travelling constantly, including at night. Checkpoints also need to be the bare minimum, probably using taxis or hire bikes to get from and to stations quicker. The route also matters - the Swiss and Romanian checkpoints just slow things down too much compared to the Germany + Italy combo (with a ferry across).
