It's policy, not law. However BA may have to pay compensation if other airlines are available but they choose not to rebook on to them. But usually the Engagement Centres will be happy to rebook on Lufthansa or the several locations in Italy within easy reach of BLQ. If it happens again, read the Signposts thread and/or contact this forum.
