I have to admit that I got very used to these codes with Google Voice. It does add a bit of a piece of mind.
What issues are you having with Apple Pay?
P.S. It's worse with some other issuers (like Citi) that verify that the provided phone is a mobile phone, and refuse to send text to Google Voice numbers (or even a paid online number that is taken from a mobile pool, and works with many other finicky systems). Cap1 is pretty leninent comparatively speaking.
