Speaking of sleep: I had hoped to end today in Bregenz, and had scouted out an affordable Ibis. However, I didn't want to book it until I had turned around at the dam. By the time I was confident I could cover all that distance, it had sold out.
My options were to pay £30 more in Bregenz, or £30 less in St. Margrethen. I had only heard of that place during route planning; I had one final (and quite tight) connection there on the way from Zurich.
So, as with the night before (was that really only a day ago?) I would be stopping short of the border. Tonight's accommodation would be an Ibis Styles, for 98CHF (£88, a £10 saving on the public rate through ALL membership).
I had muddled up my Accor brands, and was expecting the basic amenities of an Ibis Budget, so was pleasantly surprised by my room.
Finally a double bed, and a comfortable one at that. The shower was also great. Rates for breakfast were ridiculous, so I can't report on that: or much else, as I left within ten hours of checking in. Not through any fault of the hotel - I just had places to be!
