The requirement to purchase ticket(s) with the applicable United MileagePlus card will be waived for flights completed during the first 90 days following a new primary Cardmember’s account open date.
and if this applies to a Chase product upgrade from Gateway to Explorer -- I would guess yes
In the past purchasing an auxiliary item like E+ / upfare with an Chase card would trigger the bag waiver. Last reports were spotty on this and need a more recent data point.
