The customs argument is bunkum. Schengen and the EU Single Market are different things. FRA - ZRH - FCO is entirely in the Schengen area, but you enter Switzerland and leave the Single Market, whereas for FRA - DUB - FCO you don't - but you leave the Schengen area.
