The actual purpose of this newly created lower intermediate elite status in 2018 was to have something to give away to partner airline frequent flyers that wouldn't have many benefits.

Marriott previously gave away what is now BONV°Y Platinum Elite status to all United Airlines (UA) Premier Gold members, and this was proving too costly to Marriott.

Marriott BONV°Y Gold Elite status is essentially a marketing feature.
