A 1 hour separate tickets connection is very risky, especially at EWR. I hope you are aware of that.

There is generally no protection between separate tickets but a sympathetic agent might be helpful.

DCA-EWR is all United Express, meaning they use smaller regional jets. They generally park at the ends of Terminal C, C1 and C2 piers but arriving at gate C71 would be bad as its a bus gate, and that eats up a lot of time. United app tells me that a walk between C111 and C125 is 12 minutes.
