In July we were able to visit Senso-Ji and go into the main prayer hall in the back for private prayer and out the side to avoid the crowds, only 3 others were inside with us. I’ve witnessed enough bad behavior in my travels, including inside restaurants, and just prefer to avoid that stress.
So for that reason, I would prefer to avoid restaurants that are on the tourist radar screen, even if it means the owner is not visitor friendly or only accepts our reservation grudgingly.
I understand what you are saying but you are still perceived as a tourist. Sorry. But you will always be. And I too have been to some places that made me feel like I had a small glimpse into the local life like visiting the inner areas of Izumo taisha. But I'm still a 外国人 and always will be.
(Added I guess I've technically been visiting Japan over the last 34 years with my first trip during the 1990 Osaka expo). But who cares. I'm still a foreigner.
